MacYay: My new blog for Mac newbies

macyay.png

MacYay is my latest blog, released to some StumbleUpon users yesterday and properly “launched” today. It’s a Mac tips, tutorials and “resources” site aimed primarily at people new to the Mac or pretty much anyone who’s not a power user. So far I’ve written articles on application launching, taking a screenshot, moving your dock about, and deleting a bunch of stuff to get more disk space back. This isn’t likely to be of significant use to you if you’re reading my blog, but if you have a family member, boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, grandma, mother, father, brother or sister who’s got a Mac and isn’t exactly a professional user, get them on there!

It’s extremely early days yet, but MacYay is going to serve a few purposes for me. Firstly, I know a lot of newish Mac users and they’re often asking me questions or getting me to show them how to do things, and this way I can spread the knowledge and help more people at once. Secondly, it allows me to test my linkbait and headline writing skills. Third, it keeps me on the ball with instructional writing. Fourth.. you never know, it might make some money one day!

I decided to give StumbleUpon’s advertising program a trial yesterday by using it to get some preliminary visitors to the site. It definitely delivers the visitors and at just 5 cents a pop. Someone even then submitted my then-headline story to Digg where it only accrued 7 “Diggs,” but it was a start. Importantly it got Google to learn about the site from an independent source, and the whole site is indexed by them already today.

There’s still a lot to be done on the site, especially in regards to making it easier to subscribe to. Newbies aren’t likely to be too hot at doing RSS, so there’s an e-mail option already, but I want to come up with an even better idea. It might involve setting up a Fluid app that renders the MacYay site in an app-like way. I could market it as “better than Apple’s Help” or something..
