Quote #1

When I wonder if I’m wasting my time, I remind myself that some people choose to be missionaries, preachers, or priests, and that wasting merely ninety-nine percent of my time is better than going for the full hundred.

So, I know you’re being slightly facetious here, but does this mean you think that being a missionary, preacher or priest is a complete waste of time?

What about all the Ruby people who have been missionaries, including Matz?

1) Yes. At least, as much a waste of time as, say, smoking, riding the bus, or watching Robocop 3. It’s not a waste of time in the sense that it’s still a life experience after all, even if it’s not a particularly worthwhile one.

2) A lot of people I admire smoke. I think smoking is an incredible waste of time and money, but I wouldn’t begrudge someone wanting to waste their time and money on cigarettes because they might actually find such an activity essential to make their way through life.
